This is kind of a cheat: if you play back the mission to the point just before you made that fatal mistake, you can go into the menu options, take over the playback, and have a second chance.
Hit R while flying to enter these codes
DOG9 all weapons
CAT9 resets damage
COWZ freeze opponents
BAT9 hellfire missiles
RATZ9 invisibility
IPIG overload weapons
